This week, the Australasian Soccer Academy will embark on an exciting journey to Southeast Asia, ready to take on some of the region’s strongest teams. The squad, comprised of talented players from the academy’s Full-Time Program, aims to showcase their skills and gain invaluable experience on the international stage.
Since its inception in 2010, the Full-Time Program has nurtured many promising athletes, including notable alumni like Cristian Volpato. Volpato, who toured Southeast Asia with the academy at the tender age of 15, serves as an inspiring example for the current squad members.
Head coach Tony Basha is a firm believer in the power of these tours to shape young players. He emphasizes that such experiences not only reveal who is ready to pursue a professional career but also highlight those who may need to focus on their education and life outside of soccer. Basha expressed confidence in the talent within the squad, noting that many players possess the potential to don the Olyroos jersey. However, he voiced his concerns regarding the national selection process, suggesting that opportunities for players outside the A-League are limited.
Among the rising stars in the squad is Alessio Genova, who is currently making waves in Italy with Cittadella. Genova, another product of the academy’s Full-Time Program, exemplifies the kind of talent the academy is fostering.
Basha revealed that the squad has been working diligently for the past four weeks in preparation for their matches. “The preparation has been pretty good,” he stated, as they gear up to face top teams from Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia, all under-23 squads. The academy aims to challenge themselves against the best, with several 15-year-olds expected to play significant roles on the field.
The team will be led by captains Luka Strbac and Avessta Ghanbary, both of whom have been with the academy for many years and embody its core values. Basha will be supported by three assistant coaches, ensuring the team is well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
Fans can follow the team’s journey live through the Australasian Soccer Academy’s Instagram and Facebook pages. The first match is set against Bangkok United on September 29th.
As they embark on this exciting adventure, we wish the Australasian Soccer Academy all the best in their quest to test their skills against Southeast Asia’s finest.
